Lima to Paracas

Sun 9 Jan - south to Paracas. Nice hotel with swimming pool. In room 101, heh he.
In the evening saw Peruvian oyster-catchers, pelicans and royal tern on beach.

Mon 10 Jan : morning - visit to Ballestas Islands, a Nature Reserve - saw masses of boobies (related to gannets), peruvian cormorants, Humboldt penguins and sea-lions. Also a few peruvian terns, red-headed vulture and pelicans. No whales or dolphins, but quite a good show by sea-lions fighting on the rocks and in the water over a fish.
Back to Paracas past The Candelabra, a huge geoglyph carved into the sloping rock-face above the low cliffs.
Afternoon - visit to nearby Paracas National Reserve, an arid desert area adjacent to the coast. Supposed to be the driest desert on earth. Impressive cliffs with colonies of birds. Saw flamingos and an impressive flock of elegant terns wheeling around over an estuary.
